Jam Swirl Coffee Cake

1 ¼ cups milk

¼ cup sugar

½ cup shortening

1 package yeast

3 ¼ cups flour

2 eggs

½ teaspoon vanilla

1-8 ounce jar Grandma Cooky jam

1 cup powdered sugar

Heat milk, sugar, and shortening in small saucepan just to boiling, cool. Pour into medium mixing bowl. Stir in yeast. Add one cup of flour and mix well. Add eggs and vanilla and beat well. Stir enough remaining flour to make a thick batter, beat until smooth. Let rise until doubled, about one hour. Stir batter down. Pour into two greased cake pans, let rise until doubled, about one hour. Make a swirl design on top of batter with a floured spoon. Fill grooves with jam, about half of the jar. Bake in heated 375 degree oven for about 30 to 30 minutes or golden brown. Allow to cool. Fill grooves ice again with remaining jam. Mix powdered sugar with enough milk to make this glaze. Drizzle over warm coffee cakes.
